CLUB NEWS:

N1541W - Now 530W equipped

The Club Bonanza now is equipped with Wide Area Augmentation System, or WAAS.  That means that every RNAV(GPS) straight in approach will have a glideslope that will couple the with the Autopilot.

GPS altitude requires a 3D position solution - four satellites.  GPS altitude is not affected by barometric condition and non standard altitudes - it is indeed height MSL.  All towers as well as ground are painted red if 100 feet or less below your altitude and yellow if between 1000 feet and 100 feet.  If you are above 1000 feet the color is black.  Terrain alerts will be shown if an obstacle or ground is in your path.

We are pleased to be able to offer this state of the art safety system in our Club planes.

Please do not leave the landing lights on during flight.  Bulb life is a nominal 25 hours, and we replace each of them at least once a month.  Landing lights should be used at night for landing and during the day in high traffic areas only.  If left on continuously they will not be available when you need them.

We suggest using IE 5.5 (or above) or Netscape 7.0 (or above)

Hot Items

The Skylane N7608S has a Garmin GNS 430 GPS with terrain warnig and a GTX 330 Mode S Transponder as well as a new KX 155 NAV COM with Glide slope.

Remember the Bonanza N1541W has a Garmin 530W and GTX 330 transponder.

You can download Pilot Operating Instructions from http://www.garmin.com/ .

AOPA has excellent course material available (free) from:

http://www.aopa.org/asf/online_courses/gps/

The transponders enable the Garmin 430 and 530 (GPS/NAV/COMM)  to display TIS - the FAA Traffic Information System in busy airspace areas around the country (including Houston).  See the Garmin website for availability maps.  Diamonds are presented on the display screens of the 430 and 530 showing altitude of the threat aircraft below or above you.  In addition there is a projection of the future path of the threat.  In the event a collision may be in your future the diamond turns yellow and a voice commands your attention.

The Transponder is also capable of flight time, count up and count down timers, and altitude alerters - use the function button.  As typical for Garmin products it is very intuitive.  Transponder displays GND until the GPS sees 30 knots, then the transponder switches to Altitude.  Upon landing it reverts to GND.

Being Mode S the transponder identifies you as your N number whether you have been given a squawk or not.  Be extra vigilant for airspace violations...
